"George Hawkins Jr. Medical/Living Fund”

Dear Friends of George Hawkins Jr.,

Since being recently diagnosed with Plasmablastic Lymphoma, our wonderful friend, George, finds himself on an unexpected life-threatening journey and he needs our help.

To begin the healing process, the Oncologist and Radiologist have scheduled a bone marrow biopsy as well as a brain MRI.  He will soon undergo an extensive series of radiation and chemotherapy treatments.  George has captivated us with his humor, his grace, his talent, his infectious spirit and generous open heart.  It's our turn to shine love and light back at him by easing his monetary concerns so that he can focus solely on his path to wellness.  Please help bring to George some Peace of Mind with your donations and prayers.  No contribution is too little-- every bit counts!

Prior to this diagnosis, George was set to tour Asia for 3 months with Japan’s beloved Eikichi Yazawa, with whom he’s toured since 1987.  Unfortunately, he will have to forgo this tour and the salary that he would have otherwise earned.  George is insured, but as you can imagine, there are expensive medical costs, alternative treatments, dietary needs and basic living expenses that are mounting and becoming unmanageable in the wake of this unexpected diagnosis.  That’s where you—his friends and family—can step in to show your love and support by helping George during this challenging time.

As you know, George has led quite an extraordinary life wearing many hats as a touring musician for the last 40 + years.  He has contributed creatively on scores of records, films, TV projects and innumerable live concerts globally as a world-class and respected Bassist &Vocalist who has worked with countless brilliant artists and musicians.  His most fulfilling role is as a loving Father to four amazing young adults, Molly, Jenna, Jack & Uriah.

George has always been a healthy, vibrant and active man so he is ready to overcome cancer and get back to doing what he loves— sharing his incredible musical gifts on stage.

Thank you in advance for your kindness and generosity.

Peace and blessings,

Family & Friends of GHJr.

A singer-songwriter whose infectious hits graced the Billboard Charts for much of the 70’s, Jim Messina helped usher in the soft rock era. As a founding member of both the country rock supergroup Poco and the pop juggernaut Loggins & Messina (“Danny’s Song,” “Your Mama Don’t Dance”), the veteran troubadour has already made his sizable mark on rock and roll. Thankfully, he’s still going strong.

Scored a Top Ten hit with "Your Mama Don't Dance"

Jim Messina first came to prominence as a key contributor to the iconic 60’s group Buffalo Springfield, producing, engineering and playing bass on the group’s final record Last Time Around in 1968. Following the dissolution of that band, Messina and fellow Buffalo Springfield alum Richie Furay formed the influential band Poco. With Poco, Messina acted as singer, guitarist and producer, the band’s fusion of honky-tonk and rock and roll forming the template for what would become the genre of country rock. His standout track “You Better Think Twice” became the unofficial anthem of the band. Messina recorded two studio records and one live album before leaving the band to focus on producing and engineering.

The hiatus from performing didn’t last long however. Messina hooked up with a little known songwriter named Kenny Loggins with the intention of producing the talented young singer. The two had an immediate chemistry and formed the basis of the soft rock hit-making machine Loggins & Messina. Their first record Sittin In jumped out of the gates quickly, scoring a huge hit single with “Danny’s Song” in 1971. The duo’s popularity only increased with their eponymous sophomore effort, which featured the FM rock staple “Your Mama Don’t Dance.” Throughout much of the 70’s, Loggins & Messina remained a recording and touring success, in all releasing six studio albums and two live records.

Messina’s solo career began in the late 70’s, highlighted by 1979’s Oasis which featured shades of Latin Jazz elements.  He released two more well-received records on his own name in the 80’s, and took part in a handful of Poco reunion tours throughout the last 25 years. In 2005 and again in 2009 Messina reunited with Loggins for extensive nationwide tours. In recent years, Messina has returned to solo material, coming out with the Latin-tinged Under the Mojito Moon in 2009, and a live CD/DVD in 2012.

Jim Messina’s consummate legacy of musical prowess spans five decades, three acclaimed rock super groups, a vibrant solo career, and a dizzying array of game- changing producing and engineering credits, including the Doors, Lee Michaels, and Herb Alpert.  He is an indisputable expert in the fine art of making hit music. After the mid-‐60s, while acting as producer and recording engineer for Buffalo Springfield, Messina joined the temperamental band as bassist. After Buffalo Springfield split up in 1968, Messina’s friendship with group founder Richie Furay led to the creation of Poco. Jim switched to playing lead guitar, and the band went on to define a new musical genre that came to be known as country-‐rock. In 1971 he began a collaboration with newcomer Kenny Loggins and the resulting duo, Loggins and Messina, went on to record 9 albums over a period of 7 years, amassing 16 million in sales. After a series of acclaimed solo acoustic tours, Messina has formed a dynamic new band, featuring Poco alum Rusty Young, which features selected hits from all three of his past bands, as well as new material. This summer we welcome Jim Messina to Boothbay Harbor for a memorable night of music. Advance tickets $35, day of show $40. Tickets on sale March 1.

On October 11th and 12th, Channel Islands Chamber Orchestra launched its twelfth season of bringing outstanding musical performances to Ventura County audiences. Clarinetist David Singer provided two masterful performances of Mozart's Concerto in A major, followed by his personal interpretation of Gershwin's "Embracable You" as an audience-pleasing encore.  The orchestra was in fine form with the Overture to Don Giovanni and Beethoven's Seventh Symphony.

December 13 and 14, David Etterbeek gave two superb performances as soloist in F. J. Haydn's Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra. The CHICO strings opened the first half of the program in fine form with selections from Montiverdi's Orfeo and the second half with Mozart's Serenade "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik."  The full orchestra rounded out the program with Harty's setting of G.F. Handel's Water Music and Mozart's "Haffner" Symphony.

In January, we will be presenting our annual performance of Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf for fourth-graders.  On January 17 and 18, performers selected in our young artist auditions will be featured in the "Celebrating Youth" concert.  Pianist David Gatchel will play the first movement of Prokokiev's Piano Concerto No. 3; Cellist Madeline Offerman will play the first movement of Kabalevsky's Cello Concerto No. 1; Soprano Haley Slade will sing Offenbach's Doll's Aria and Gershwin's Summertime;  Baritone Adam Hedelund will sing Gluck's "Che faro senza Euridice" from Orpheus and Schubert's Ave Maria.  In addition, the orchestra will perform Suite No. 2 from Bizet's Carmen.

Following concerts for the 2014-15 season will include performances Of Bevan Manson's Santa Monica Mountains for Jazz Guitar and Chamber Orchestra with Hans Ottsen as soloist, Maurice Ravel's Concerto in G with Miriam Arichea as soloist and F.J. Haydn's The Creation in our annual Choral-Orchestral Spectacular.
